The Eastern Shore of Virginia’s heritage is now being recognized on the national level with a grant award of $500,000 to help in its preservation and accessibility.

Eastern Shore Public Library recently hosted an archives consultant to evaluate the preservation needs of the library’s local history collections. The consultant was funded by a National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Assistance Grant.

Accomack County held a pre-bid meeting for contractors planning to bid on the new regional library in Parksley, Virginia on April 3, 2019.

The new Heritage Center’s vision is to protect, preserve, and make accessible all current and future collections of verbal and photographic records of the 400 year history and genealogy of the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

This 1959 Mark 9 was donated to the Eastern Shore Public Library to help raise money for a badly needed new main library in this rural area in coastal Virginia.

Saving Eastern Shore history has become a focus of community support for the new regional library to be built in Parksley, Virginia. Eastern Shore Public Library Board of Trustees recently approved naming the addition to the former grocery store the “Eastern Shore of Virginia Heritage Center” which will house archives, a research room, lecture hall, and makerspace.
