Why do We Need our Public Libraries?

Here are Ten Reasons! Our Public Libraries:

are free to everyone. Library cards are free. All those books, CDs and DVDs, are free. So are online resources, computer labs, and events. All  are available and free to anyone with their free library card.  Did we say free? We meant free. and we mean free for the future, too.

provide a sense of community.  They offer classes and programs for all ages, places for groups and clubs to meet and comfortable spaces for all patrons to enjoy.

make a positive impact on local economies. They revitalize the places where they are located. They give small businesses free access to information to help them grow. They help job seekers find career advice and jobs through free computer access and workforce development programs.

support education.  Our public libraries cooperate with local schools and other educational institutions.  Their children’s programs help kids enjoy developing and retaining learning skills with their secret weapon: fun.  Access to computers and databases helps students of all ages to complete scholastic work from grammar school through post graduate degrees.

promote literacy in children and adults. Summer reading programs and camps build lifelong reading habits. “English as a Second Language” programs serve our newest community members.

bridge the digital divide by providing free computer access to citizens without home internet access.  Librarians guide patrons in developing digital literacy.

give kids a safe place to read, listen, write, and speak –and maybe even do their homework.

preserve and share our history through our local history archives.

help local non-profits expand their capacity to serve their communities through access to digital and print resources.

reward curiosity and learning with fun!

We think you will agree that these are all excellent reasons to support our local public libraries!
